Hello! Welcome to Kraken Reads. Here you will find book reviews, lists of book recommendations, and posts about other bookish things. Although the website is visually ocean-themed, books of all genres and themes will be discussed – as long as they are turtley awesome! (… you will have to put up with the occasional ocean pun, I’m afraid).
I hope that you will enjoy reading my humble opinions, and that I might help you discover books that you grow to love. I don’t want this to be a one-way conversation, me shouting into the void, so please comment on any of the posts and join in the discussion! You can also contact me privately here if you’d prefer. I’d love to hear from you!
I have an irrational fear of leaving the house without a book, even if I’m just popping out for 10 minutes – because what if I got stuck somewhere and didn’t have anything to read?
Books have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I read pretty much anything I can get my hands on: literary fiction, sci-fi, travel writing, fantasy, modern classics, graphic novels, popular science, autobiography, crime, short stories… I’m also a languages student, which means I am particularly interested in international and translated fiction.
I’ve been a bookseller for a total of three years, shared between a secondhand bookshop and an independent bookshop, which has mainly resulted in living in a permanent state of avalanche danger thanks to all the books I have brought home from work. My to-read list is so long that it often plunges me into despair, but I’m hoping that this website will give me an excuse to devote even more of my day to reading so that I can experience more and more incredible books.
